I recently read a blog post where the writer recommended not having expectations. Her point was that without expectations, there is nothing to be disappointed about. But I had to disagree. What is wrong with having high expectations?
High expectations motivate us to do more than we think we can, more than we think is possible. We strive for excellence. It is the attachment to the result or the outcome that leads to disappointment, not the expectation.
I have high expectations for others and myself. Without high expectations, where is the belief that the impossible might become possible?
This applies not just to our yoga practice but to any endeavor. Focus on the process, just don’t become attached to the result. Apply yourself to your actions. Have high expectations. Do your best. Whatever happens after that, happens.
“…for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
