“It’s not who we are that holds us back, it’s who we think we are not.”
I’ve often met people who tell me they can’t practice yoga because they are not flexible or not strong enough. Once someone told me that they couldn't practice because they were too anxious. I see a difference between limiting ourselves and discovering our limits.
When we decide what we cannot do because we think we are not that kind of person, we limit ourselves and the possibility of growth. It’s a fixed mindset that thinks this is how we are, and therefore we are not able to learn and grow.
We need to catch ourselves when we think in these terms, and learn to explore the possibilities before we decide who we are not. Maybe it’s fear that is holding us back. Or maybe we don’t believe we are good enough or smart enough or brave enough.
In our yoga practice, we discover our limitations and challenge ourselves to move beyond them. We become stronger, more flexible, less anxious.
We need to extend this method of thought to our entire lives.
