Why/How Yoga?
I now cannot imagine life without yoga. I come from an extensive twelve-year history of dance. Dancing taught me discipline and that breath and movement must be linked. After those years came to a close, I found that I was missing those keys. I was always intrigued by yoga, but feared that committing to practice would take over my life and not leave enough time for everything else. So, I took yoga classes sporadically over the years, but always kept it an arm's length away. That is, until I encountered Detroit Yoga. I first met Jason Schramm and his methods in 2006 when DY had a satellite space in my hometown of Detroit. This yoga was different. Here, I quickly found a school that fulfilled what I was searching for. Not only did I find a return to discipline, breath and movement, but I deepened those elements in every way.
After the DY in Corktown closed, being the Detroiter that I am, I was determined to keep practicing, but in the city. Again, I returned to taking various classes, but nothing fit quite right. I knew that I needed to surround myself with like-minded students and dedicated teachers that believe in traditional practice and truly support growth. In the spring of 2010 I resolved to commute to Royal Oak and have not regretted a moment of it.
Practicing yoga has in fact proved the opposite of my fears. I have learned that I cannot afford not to practice. Maintaining a structured ashtanga, vinyasa and meditation practice has opened life up to so many more opportunities, growth and transformation. To me, yoga mirrors ideal living, where learning, exploring, and discovering great things are never ending.
