Detroit Yoga
Detroit Yoga was founded by Jason Schramm in 2003. He began studying Yoga in 1999. From his very first experience with Yoga, the gross physical benefits were obvious, such as improved posture, strength and flexibility. However, some of the more subtle physical benefits took many years to realize, like enhanced respiration, digestion, and elimination, resulting in less sickness and more energy.
In addition to the physical improvements, his mind began to change as well...being able to slow down and focus more, identify and remove negative habits of thought, and stay calm in difficult situations. Through his consistent, long term practice, Jason has experienced that Yoga has the ability to make one not only healthy and strong, but also more calm, focused, and effective in everything that they do.
In order to reap the most fruit from Yoga, consistency of practice is key. To help students keep up with their practice and therefore receive the most benefits from it, we (Jason is no longer alone) have created a special, supportive system and method of teaching and practice, as well as a very unique environment to practice in. You won't find loud music blasting in DY classes or a staff of 12 or more part-time teachers who don't know who's in their classes. Each DY Location has one head teacher, with just a few assistant teachers. We firmly believe that in order to build a healthy and strong Yoga practice, not only does the student have to be consistent and committed, but they must also have a teacher that is consistent and committed.
Why the name Detroit Yoga? In the minds of many, the city of Detroit is emblematic of chaos, dysfunction, and imbalance; it is a broken down, defeated, core city- a perceived embarrassment to the surrounding suburbs. For Jason, it was only natural to name, and thus link, his yoga school and practice after the city that has prompted so much negative and divisive thinking. Yoga literally translates as unity- to join or bring together. The many qualities that yoga embodies have the potential to bring harmony, strength, and connection to and within the individual. Through Detroit Yoga, we are offering our students the tools to build awareness and to affect change, and he is perhaps doing the same for this forgotten urban center. The city of Detroit's seal states, "Speramus meliora, resuget cineribus." We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes. Similarly, Jason is urging his students to wake up and rise above.
