Lisa Potter
Why/How Yoga? In the summer of 2000, realizing that I could not continue in a chronically stressed state, I took my first yoga class. I couldn’t touch my toes, and I wobbled all over the place. But when I finally made it to savasana, I felt an overwhelming feeling of stillness that I had not found anywhere else.
With a consistent and committed practice, I soon noticed how the benefits from yoga took the edge off of my anxiety-ridden persona while at the same time I grew stronger and more flexible.
Eventually, I became certified to teach yoga, but I didn’t feel truly qualified, so I continued to practice and to seek out a yoga school that gave me what I needed – structure, discipline, and challenge. That’s when I discovered Detroit Yoga.
I honestly have to say that it wasn’t until I started to practice at Detroit Yoga in 2007 that I made a real connection between my physical yoga practice and the deeper changes that could occur in my life. I cleaned up my practice and learned how to work harder mentally, not just “work out.” Yoga is not just moving your body around – it’s changing your mind. It’s quieting your mind, gaining awareness, becoming more patient, less reactive, more present, and more compassionate.
Training and Teaching Experience... Lisa has been practicing Ashtanga and Vinyasa consistently since 2000 and has trained over 1000 hours with DY (Jason Schramm) since the fall of 2007. Lisa has been teaching the DY method and classes since the spring of 2010 and in the summer of 2011 moved into a full-time position of head teacher in Royal Oak.
